"Through Rain and Wind and Weather / Hell-Bent for Leather"

Notes

"Through Rain and Wind and Weather / Hell-Bent for Leather"

They could have jumped in on the first possible day, but they wanted Quinn and Amy to attend, which meant waiting until the end of Quinn's semester at least, and so it is not until the first weekend of June that Daria is pacing her room and fussing with her suit cuffs and snapping the NO ALCOHOL band against her wrist.

Neither she nor Jane can afford more than one nice outfit, so everything they're wearing today can be interview clothes, swapping out a shirt or a tie.

"You look fine," Jane tells her, leaning against the door frame, occupying space unconventionally, like she hasn't a care in the world. "A suit suits you."

"It suits you," Daria fires back. "I look like I was skipped for a diamond heist. Or like I failed the audition to be on a mission from God."

"Funny you should say that." Jane reaches into her jacket and pulls out a spectacle-case. She pops it open.

"Sunglasses?"

"Yours are prescription. We'll match," Jane says, patting her front breast pocket. "You need a pair anyway," she points out, reasonably.

Daria starts pacing again. "How is it you look good in everything whereas the only things that work at all for me aren't suitable for polite company?"

Jane's eyes drop to the elastic band on Daria's wrist. Up goes her eyebrow.

"It's generally useful," Daria says, "and nobody knows what I started wearing it for. And it'll be covered by my sleeve."

"And you want just a little reminder of that with you."

"No one here can know about that." She amends, "No one who doesn't already."

"Ah," Jane realizes. "It's the guest list that's on your mind."

Daria stands still and snaps her elastic band once more. "Do you think we should have invited her?"

"I think," Jane says, "we got the best intel possible from our sources. And I think I want you focusing on me today instead of wondering whether or not she'll show up."

"Two of my relatives," Daria contemplates. "One of yours. Is that right? Are we doing this right?"

"Lyra will be your outlaw in-law soon enough. Or, you mean..."

"I don't know what I mean." Deep breaths, another band-snap.

"I'm happy with the number we had to get pizza catered for. Under all this anxious energy, I know you're happy. In fact, I'm satisfied with everything except not knowing what's in that little wooden box you haven't opened for me yet."

"Oh. Oh!" Daria grabs the tiny chest. "I thought the box itself looked cool. But it was also the right size... You know how Marina is into silver-casting?"

Nestled inside, a miniature shining sunflower, and a metal, bell-shaped bloom of deadly nightshade. "Lapel ornaments, you know?" Daria offers in a near-squeak.

"They're lovely," Jane says. She fits the replica Atropa bella-donna into her suit jacket where it belongs. "Now, may I?" Daria nods, and Jane adds the sunflower to her lapel.

"They do... suit," Daria admits.

"Now," Jane tells her. "It's been three weeks since this became legal. We've got witnesses, an ordained friend, and pizza. We're in love and we can wear sunglasses. Let's hit it."

Afterword

End Notes

The title is from the theme for Rawhide, which Daria and Jane know because Jake and Elwood perform it in the bar that plays both kinds of music, country and Western.
